Why does the newborn cry at birth?

The newborn cries because the Shaytan (Satan) pokes them in their side. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'There is no child born except that the Shaytan touches him, and he starts crying because of the Shaytan's touch, except for the son of Maryam and his mother.' Then Abu Hurairah said: 'Recite if you wish: {And I have named her Maryam, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allah].}' (Agreed upon).
